Materials needed

  • Floor cushions or couch pillows
  • Large play blanket or quilt
  • Rolled clean socks

How to play

  1. 1The child starts at one end of the blanket while you sit or kneel beside the first cushion.
  2. 2When you say go, the child crawls or steps onto the first cushion, then the next, while you describe each bump.
  3. 3The child reaches the sock prize, picks it up with both hands, and walks it back along the blanket—not over furniture.
  4. 4A second pass can add a freeze at the middle cushion if the child still looks steady and interested.
  5. 5The course ends when interest fades, the child looks wobbly, or ten minutes are up; then sit together on the blanket before standing.

Look for

  • Hands and knees or feet staying on the cushions
  • Pausing when asked to freeze
  • Carrying the sock with two hands instead of throwing it at people
  • Checking your face before the next climb

Safety

  • Keep cushion stacks low and spot every climb; do not use chairs, stools, or couch backs as part of the course.
  • Do not let the child jump from furniture onto the path.
  • Stop if the child falls, hits a hard edge, or cannot stand without looking dizzy.
  • Stop if a cushion slides and the path is no longer stable.
  • Stay within arm's reach during climbing and anytime the room is dimmed.
  • Use only intact household items with no loose buttons, batteries, or parts small enough to swallow.
  • Keep stacked cushions low and away from stairs, glass tables, and hard furniture corners.
  • Never shine a flashlight toward anyone's eyes, and stop loud play if the child covers their ears.

Add the full pack to your child's calendar and share it with a caregiver.
